90's Jeans and how to wear them today - Salsa Jeans

1990s jeans: what kind of jeans did we wear in the 1990s?

Fashion is like life: it goes in cycles. And trends always come back. Today, we're going to talk about a trend that's come back, and we're delighted about it: 1990s jeans. And that's not all: we're going to give you some tips and ideas for wearing these jeans in 2021 and matching them to get a look that's more modern and up to date. But before we begin, let’s take some inspiration directly from fashion 30 years ago.

The 1990s was a time of rebelling against the 1980s. As happens with practically all trends, they represented a counter-revolution against the previous period. What does this mean? 1990s fashion was characterised by a return to minimalist fashion, in contrast with the more elaborate and eye-catching trends of the 1980s.

Although some of the trends from the late 1980s were still around in the early 1990s, the popularity of grunge and alternative rock contributed to the simple, casual look that became prevalent during the 1990s. The non-conformist nature of fashion made the casual chic look gain in popularity. This look included t-shirts, jeans, sweatshirts with hoods and trainers and was a trend that continued during the 2000s.

Mom jeans

Jeans or mom jeans were part of these more “relaxed” looks and were indispensable for any wardrobe. Combined with simple items, such as a white shirt and a belt (for more elegant looks) or a basic t-shirt and trainers (a totally 1990s look), looser, high rise jeans could be found both in women's wardrobes and in fashion magazines.

Basically, these jeans aim to be a comfortable item, but they also help shape the figure thanks to their high (or very high) waist.

High Rise Straight

High Rise Straight jeans are a modern interpretation of a 1990s classic. With an extremely high waist and slightly looser around the hips, thigh and leg, these jeans are a revamped version of the most popular jeans for women from the time of Nirvana.

How to match 1990s jeans in 2021

  • White shirts never go out of fashion. Match your High Rise Straight jeans with a shirt tucked in. That way, you’ll be able to accentuate the waist of the jeans even more.

  • T-shirts are also basics that never fail. You can go for white t-shirts or t-shirts with prints.

  • These jeans are a statement in themselves. That's why we prefer to wear them without a belt so as not to break the silhouette and let it flow from head to toe.

  • And on the subject of toes... what you wear on your feet can also change your look a lot. These jeans can be matched with practically any kind of footwear: from delicate sandals (to make the outfit more elegant and slender) to classic white trainers.

  • Finally, you can also go for asymmetric or more original tops for evenings or special occasions.
