Black Friday2021 is on 26 November.
What’s the story behind Black Friday?
In the US, the Christmas shopping season has started on the day after Thanksgiving since 1952. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, lots of Santa Claus or Thanksgiving Day parades were sponsored by department stores. These stores would use the parades to launch large advertising campaigns (such as the famous Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York). Eventually, it became an unwritten rule that stores would only do their Christmas advertising after the parade was over. Thus, the day after Thanksgiving became the day when the shopping season officially started.
Why is it called Black Friday?
There are several theories. The first suggests that the term derives from an accounting reference to profitability. Stores operate at a loss, or are “in the red”, until the day after Thanksgiving, when sales skyrocket and they turn a profit, or are “in the black”. Another more precise explanation dates back to the early 1960s, when police officers in Philadelphia began using the term “Black Friday” to describe the chaos created by the large number of shoppers that would flock from the suburbs to the city to do their Christmas shopping.
