Learn all about Lyocell (or Tencel)

You’ve certainly heard of Lyocell and you probably have something in your wardrobe made from this soft, light fabric. And now that the good weather is coming and the temperature is heating up, fashion editorials and collections are filling up with fantastic proposals made using this material, which is also one of the main focuses of the textile sector when it comes to sustainable materials.

But what do you really know about Lyocell? And Tencel? Are they the same thing, or two different fabrics? We’ve prepared a very comprehensive guide about this fabric which has become very popular in the trends in recent seasons, including its origin and main features, as well as the care to be taken when washing and ironing things made from Lyocell. You’ll find out everything now!

What is Lyocell?

Unlike most other fabrics, which are divided into two categories — those made from natural fibres (like wool, linen, cotton, ramie and silk) and those made from synthetic fibres, using petrochemicals (like polyester and nylon)— Lyocell, also known as Tencel, has a mixed or semi-synthetic origin. It's a plant fibre, a cellulose derivative made mainly from eucalyptus trees, but it’s also processed with advanced synthetic substances.

What's the difference between Tencel and Lyocell?

There’s no difference: they're the same thing! You can call it what you like because the chemical composition is exactly the same. Both names are used because Lyocell is the technical name for the fibre and Tencel is the registered trademark.

Features of Lyocell

What makes Lyocell so interesting for the textile fashion sector and, more specifically, for the sustainable fashion world? Essentially, it is a naturally biodegradable and compostable fibre and no harmful by-products are created during the manufacturing process. The production process for this fibre is also very short and simple when compared to other synthetic fibres and, consequently, less water and less energy are needed.

But apart from being sustainable, Lyocell is a fabric that we love because it's cool and light and perfect for the spring-summer season because:

  • it’s very pleasant to the touch as it’s soft and smooth;

  • it’s a fabric that provides high moisture absorption, even more than cotton, making it the perfect fabric for you if you sweat a lot or for the warmer months;

  • it’s antibacterial thanks to its excellent temperature regulation and perspiration control properties: it can create a very beneficial antibacterial effect for people with sensitive skin or that are prone to developing rashes;

  • and it’s very durable, as well as being a very resistant and stretchy fabric.

Does Lyocell wrinkle?

Good news! Lyocell or Tencel doesn't get wrinkled, or at least not very wrinkled, thanks to its lightness and stretchiness. In any case, we recommend that you always read the labels to check the care instructions for your Lyocell clothes.

Is Lyocell stretchy?

Yes, it certainly is. In fact, it keeps its stretchiness for a long time, despite the most important thing being that it's a soft, comfortable fabric, and don’t worry, it never loses this characteristic.

Does Lyocell shrink?

Yes and no. The first time you wash your Lyocell clothes, they’ll shrink around 3%, but if you take proper care of them, they won't shrink anymore in subsequent washes.

How should I wash Lyocell clothes?

To prevent shrinking, handwash your Tencel clothes in cold water, using a mild detergent and dry them in the open air. Avoid tumble drying and ironing so as not to damage the fabric and to prevent shrinking.
